I begin a question & answers session to be filled by every one one prtion by one persion and next portion by other one.

First question from Summer 2006
Q.1.(a) What are the major stages of engineering design? Discuss with a suitable example ? 8 Marks

Answer
Design process is a sequence of events that help to define the stages of design and unfold the design in a systematic manner

Need

Goals

Market analysis

Functions

Specifications

Conceptualization

Concept selection and evaluating alternatives

Analysis

Experimentation & prototyping

Marketing & Sales

Need: It is necessary to formulate a clear exact statement of problem in engineering words and symbols. Need should be identified by customer request , modification of early design

Goals: Now fill up by You

Goal

goal is the target set by the design team in the developement of the design. it regards with economic fesibility of the design, and its manufacturability

Market Analysis

Through market analysis design team can get the information about what others have done in solving the same problem. Two different techniques are generally employed in market analysis
1. direct search
2. Indirect search

( regret to note that no one participated-  shine show)

In the engg design process one of the imp stage is conceptualisation.

Basically there are three methods to do so.

1.Brainstorming

Ideas are given out by experts on the topic in this method of conceptualisation. The topic is given at the start of the discussion.

2.Synectics

People are not necessarily experts over here. The topic of discussion is given after one hour of discussion.

3.Morphological analysis

This method gives the product life cycle

Concept Selection and evaluating Alternatives

In this stage we produce more than one artifacts that will satisfy the need

Analysis

We analyse the different types of components of machine by considering technological ,economical, and manufacturing considerations along with modelling and simulation
