The changes to the ranking system that I made at the start of 2005 proved to be inflationary, so I arbitrarily lowered all the ratings. (It doesn't matter whether the top player has a rating of 3000 and the lowest player a rating of 1200, or whether those numbers are 8000 and 6200.) As most if not all of the ratings inflation was due to replacing low (and constantly deflationary) 2004 ratings with higher 2005 ratings, the system wasn't just suffering from ratings inflation, it was suffering from an inflation that was spiralling out of control. There might still be some inflation this year, as I believe I haven't lowered the ratings enough to have the ratings start at a lower point at the start of 2006 than what they were at the start of 2005. But the inflation should be less, and steadier.
As best I can tell, the new character encoding scheme is working in all the browsers I use for testing (Opera 9, K-Meleon which uses the Mozilla rendering engine, and a front-end for the horrible but omnipresent Internet Explorer). So, I'm leaving the encoding that way. If anybody is having problems, feel free to e-mail me!
