1.   Answer the question

The examiner wants you to answer the question in a clear and simple manner.

A plain, direct answer which is straight to the point creates a favourable impression. The more concise your answer, the easier it is to mark. Get straight to the point!

2.   There are no traps

There will not be any 'hidden traps' in the questions. The examiners are not trying to catch you. The 'knack' to exam success is a combination of ' hard work, preparation, and clear thinking'.

3.   Examiners are human too

Yes - it's true - some exam questions are occasionally hard to understand. But that means that they are hard for everybody. The examiner will be pleased if your script is well written and easy to understand. That's the best way to get good marks - just answer the question.

4.   What examiners DON'T WANT?

·       untidy work that is difficult to read

·       longwinded answers which drift on and off the subject

·       answers which have been written to 'impress', filled with lots of jargon

·       too much personal opinion, name-dropping, and generalization

The secret is to write simple, clear answers which get straight to the point.

5.   How to gain extra marks

·        Get straight to the point.

·        Don't write lengthy introductions.

·        Stay on the subject. Avoid digressions, waffling, or 'packing'.

·        Relate all parts of your answer to the original question.

·        Show evidence of your knowledge of the subject.

Wherever possible, give concrete examples as evidence.
